About Us
Breitung Township was organized on August 1st, 1882. We are located in northeastern St. Louis County, Minnesota on the eastern end of Lake Vermilion. Our township covers 42 square miles and is home to 489 residents. Whether you are just visiting or live here year-round, we have plenty of services and attractions to keep you safe and entertained.

Breitung Township holds regular monthly meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM. The meetings are held at the Timothy Tomsich Community Center located at 33 1st Avenue, Soudan, Minnesota. McKinley Park Campground
Located on the shores of beautiful Lake Vermilion, McKinley Park Campground is a paradise for the fisherman, boater and outdoor enthusiast
Underground Mine
The Soudan Underground Mine was Minnesota’s first iron ore mine – the Soudan Mine – opened in 1882.
McKinley Park trail
The McKinley Park Trail was originally constructed in 1988. The trail is a multi-use trail for ATV’s, snow mobiles, bikers, hikers, walkers and the many outdoor enthusiasts that live and visit the area.
Lake Vermilion State Park
Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park is one of the newest state parks in Minnesota. It is located in the Superior National Forest, near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
Skating Rink
The skating rink is now open for the 2024-2025 skating season. There is a separate covered kiddie rink for smaller children to enjoy.
Mesabi Trail
Northern Minnesota’s Mesabi trail is a bike/hiking trail that goes from Grand Rapids, MN all the way over to McKinley.
