Lake Vermilion is a premier Walleye lake in the area. The lake is also home to Northern Pike, Small and Large-mouth Bass, and Crappies. Vermilion is also gaining notoriety as a world class Muskie lake. Over the past several years Lake Vermilion has hosted many professional fishing tournaments. The lake has over 40,000 acres of water with 1,200 miles of shoreline and over 365 islands. With its spectacular scenery, Lake Vermilion is an outstanding choice for boating or camping.
In addition to the excellent fishing opportunities, McKinley Park is also adjacent to a world-class bike trail system, the Mesabi Trail. Hop on the McKinley Park trail toward Soudan and hit the Mesabi Trail, which branches Southwest toward Tower, Embarrass, and Babbitt or Northeast toward Ely. Along the trail you’ll find plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing and scenic landscapes. During your stay, don’t forget to visit the Lake Vermilion Soudan Underground Mine State Park for excellent hiking and an amazing history lesson of our community dating back to 1882!
