Breitung Township Bike Trails

The Mesabi Trail is a bike/hiking trail courses over 150 miles and takes a turn directly through Breitung Township. Users can travel the trail in multiple directions – either up toward Ely, or through Tower, and over to Giants Ridge. While you’re here, stop by the Soudan Store for ice-cream or take the McKinley Park Trail for some extra miles and extraordinary scenery. More information about the Mesabi Trail is available on their website: www.mesabitrail.com

The McKinley Park Trail was originally constructed in 1988.  The trail is a multi-use trail for ATV’s, snow mobiles, bikers, hikers, walkers and the many outdoor enthusiasts that live in and visit the area. The trail runs from the entrance of the Soudan Underground Mine to McKinley Park Campground; Breitung Township completed a reconstruction of this segment of the trail in 2023. Breitung Township and the City of Tower are currently working to extend the trail fully from McKinley Park to Hoodoo Point, creating a safe and complete loop between the two communities. Funding for the creation of the trail has been granted by Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation (IRRR), the Blandin Foundation, and the State of Minnesota – Active Transportation. We look forward to enjoying a beautiful new segment of trail in late 2027.
